This most recent article, published here in issue 61 of the online magazine fútbol-táctico, presents four representative drills for working on a variety of defensive fundamentals, in addition to the defensive play formations that these different fundamentals generate. The drills work on both individual (defensive positioning, interception) and group fundamentals (withdrawal, timing). The fundamentals used for a zone defence vary from those used for a man-to-man defence. Similarly, it’s not the same to defend on a ½ pitch as it is to do so on a ¾ pitch, although there are similarities, there are also a great many differences, which we will now take a look at
